Genital warts are a widespread problem. As many as ten to twenty million Americans have genital warts, and as many as one million people contract the disease per year in America alone. While anyone participating in a form of unprotected sexual activity can get the disease, there are some groups that are more susceptible to contracting it. Pregnant women are especially at risk for the disease, and may contract it easier than others; also, those with some type of deficiency of the immune system are more likely than the average person to catch genital warts. Sometimes, there are abnormal skin growths that can appear to be genital warts, but in all reality, they are a harmless development that will go away.
